There was a buzz in the Khayelitsha Cookies bakery last week when teams from the various BidAir lounges and head office got their hands 'doughy' as they joined the bakery team in creating the renown delicious cookies. The nine BidAir Bakers donned the appropriate hair nets and aprons, and discovered what it is like to make the cookies from rolling the dough to taking them out of the ovens. The laughter of the new team, combined with the amazing regular team of women from Khayelitsha, reverberated off the walls as they worked.

We asked Robyn Newton to chat to Nongomso Mdata and Zodwa Ntanta, two hearing impaired ladies who are a wonderful part of the Khayelitsha Cookie bakery team ...

The offices of Khayelitsha Cookies are always a hive of activity! Any given day will find the phone ringing off the hook, a queue of people waiting to talk to the admin team … and invariably, someone sitting at one of the desks tasting cookies. When I arrived there I was ushered into the bakery where I could smell the latest cookies baking, and see dozens of very organised teams of workers, smartly kitted out in their regulatory gear.

I was there to talk to two of the three women from Khayelitsha who have no hearing and are working at what is reputed to be the finest cookie company in South Africa. Nongomso and Zodwa came out of the bakery full of smiles and exuding energy. Both of them were from Noluthando School for students with learning difficulties in Khayelitsha. “Our teacher helped us get work as it's not easy, and we are so grateful for that,” said Zodwa.

I am a dietetic student at Stellenbosch University. The vendor heading the main cafeteria on our campus has recently started to sell your products. I forced myself to write this letter just to let you know that I totally ADORE your products (especially the chocolate brownies). I will continue to support your initiative and will urge my friends and family to do the same=) ... Because not only does you company make an attempt to empower women from various communities and meet children's basic health needs (in the Philani clinic), but the quality of your product is breathtaking.
